Moving to or visiting Japan is exciting, but making real, lasting friendships across the language and culture gap can be tough, especially outside of school or work. First Friend in Japan is a laid-back beach meetup designed to fix that: a relaxed space where Americans (whether you’re here short-term or living in Japan long-term) and local Japanese folks can meet, talk, and actually build a connection instead of trading small talk and never speaking again.

We’ll be set up right on the beach for the afternoon. Expect a casual, welcoming vibe, no suits, no formal presentations, just good conversation with sand between your toes. I’ll be hosting the whole thing personally: kicking things off with icebreakers, mixing up groups so English and Japanese speakers are paired together, and making sure everyone, especially first-timers who don’t know anyone yet, has people to talk to. Whether you’re looking to practice your Japanese, your English, make local friends, or just meet people outside your usual circle, this is built for that.

A note on language: All levels welcome. you don’t need to be fluent in Japanese or English to join. Half the fun is figuring it out together.
